Rhodomyrtus tomentosa is a flowering plant in the family Myrtaceae, native to southern and southeastern Asia, from India, east to southern China, Taiwan and the Philippines, and south to Malaysia and Sulawesi. It grows in coasts, natural forest, riparian zones, wetlands, moist and wet forests, bog margins, from sea level up to 2400 m elevation [1].
It is an evergreen shrub growing up to 4 m tall. The leaves are opposite, leathery, 5-7 cm long and 2-3.5 cm broad, three-veined from the base, oval, obtuse to sharp pointed at the tip, glossy green above, densely grey or rarely yellowish-hairy beneath, with a wide petiole and an entire margin. The flowers are solitary or in clusters of two or three, 2.5-3 cm diameter, with five petals which are tinged white outside with purplish-pink or all pink. The fruit is edible, 10-15 mm long, purple, round, three or four-celled, capped with persistent calyx lobes, soft, with 40-45 seeds in a double row in each cell; seed dispersal is by frugivorous birds and mammals. Seed production and germination rates are high. [2], [3], [4].
Synonyms include Myrtus canescens Lour., Myrtus tomentosa Aiton, Rhodomyrtus parviflora Alston, and Rhodomyrtus tomentosa (Aiton) Wight. Common names include Ceylon hill gooseberry (English), Downy myrtle (English-Florida), Downy rose myrtle (English-Florida), Feijoa (French), Hill gooseberry (English), Hill guava (English), Isenberg bush (English-Hawaii), Myrte-groseille (French), and Rose myrtle (English-Florida)


Cultivation and uses
It has shown promise as a fire retardant species for use in fire breaks in the Himalayas.[5] It is a popular ornamental plant in gardens in tropical and subtropical areas, grown for its abundant flowers and sweet, edible fruit.[6] The fruit can be made into pies and jams, or used in salads. In Vietnam, the fruits are used to produce a wine called rượu sim.

Management
It has become an invasive species in some countries, spreading to form large, monospecific thickets that displace native flora and fauna. Areas especially affected include Florida, Hawaii, and French Polynesia.
It is able to invade a range of habitats, from pine flatwoods to mangrove marshes [7]. It grows in a wide range of soil types, including salty coastal soil, but is sensitive to heavy salt spray.[8] It is fire-adapted, i.e., is able to resprout prolifically after fire.[9]
This species invades the understory of native pinelands in Florida, forming dense monoculture thickets that displace native flora and fauna through overcrowding and competition. Has the potential to alter the natural fire regimes of invaded areas.[10]
A risk assessment of Rhodomyrtus tomentosa for Hawaii and other Pacific islands was prepared by the Kaulunani Urban Forestry Program and US Forest Service. The alien plant screening system is derived from Pheloung et al. (1999) with minor modifications for use in Pacific islands.[11] The result is a score of 8 and a recommendation of "Likely to cause significant ecological or economic harm in Hawaii and on other Pacific Islands as determined by a high WRA score, which is based on published sources describing species biology and behavior in Hawaii and/or other parts of the world."
In integrated management, seedlings can be removed manually. Mature shrubs may be felled using a chainsaw or brush cutter, and the stumps treated with a commercial herbicide.[12]
It was introduced to Florida and Hawaii in about 1920 (Degener, 1963 in Langeland and Burks, 1999). In Florida it has now spread to 17 counties (Center for Natural Resources, 2003). On Hawaii it was forming impenetrable thickets on Kauai and Hilo by the 1950s (Hosaka and Thistle, 1954 in Langeland and Burks, 1999). It is currently on the State of Hawaii noxious weed list (Meyer, 1998 in PIER, 2003).[13] Research was conducted at the University of Florida 1998-2000 to describe the ecology and determine effective control methods for this species.
It is also a serious problem on Raiatea, French Polynesia (Meyer, 1998 in PIER, 2003).[

A BEAUTIFUL and useful plant by any standard, the Rhodomyrtus tomentosa or the Rose Myrtle (known as the Kemunting in Malay) is a popular shrub, even growing wild in open ground and easily recognisable. Almost all parts of the plant are densely downy; they have a cover of greyish velvety hairs. Native to Malaysia, it adds colour and interest to the landscape, and birds love to feed on the sweet, juicy fruits.The plant belongs to the family Myrtaceae. Our Jambu Air (Eugenia spp), and Gelam (Melaleuca spp) also belong to the some family, sharing the same honour as the well-known Australian Eucalyptus and Callistemon (or Bottle brushes). An evergreen shrub, it can grow up to 2m or more. Its leaves are ovate and leathery, about 4-6cm long, with three longitudinal veins running from the tips to the base of the leaves. The flowers are rose to deep pink or lilac and are axillary: 3cm wide with pink stamens and downy on the outside, like the foliage. Berries form after the flowers have set. The fruits are very sweet and juicy and attract even children. They have a pleasant taste and are good for jams. The plant has local medicinal value. A concoction of the roots and leaves are drunk as a remedy for diarrhoea and stomach ache. The flowering shrub has been widely used in Sabah and Sarawak and the idea is also catching up here in landscape planting, as it attracts more birds and small wildlife to urban areas. The plant is very free-flowering - you always see the plant in bud and flow


Kemunting fruits, which look like blueberries but actually come from the guava family, grow abundantly in the Merang area. This fruit is a favorite amongst the locals here who would just go wandering about and picking them off the tree. Research officer, Salahuddin Tamby from Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development Institute (MARDI) said, “MARDI had come up with a process to turn the berries into jam and juice back in 1980s and had received positive feedback on the product.” On the other hand, MARDI director Wahab Ismail said that the technology for processing the fruits are available but not the planting of trees which contributed to the hesitation felt by investors as there might not be enough supply for commercialization.

Abstract
Phytochemical and bioactivity studies of the flowers of Melastoma malabathricum L. (Melastomataceae) have been carried out. The ethyl acetate extract yielded three compounds, identified as naringenin, kaempferol and kaempferol-3-O-d-glucoside, and methanol extract gave kaempferol-3-O-(2″,6″-di-O-p-trans-coumaroyl)glucoside and kaempferol-3-O-d-glucoside. The crude extracts and isolated compounds were screened for their antioxidant and cytotoxic activities. The antioxidant assay was carried out by the DPPH radical-scavenging electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopic method. The cytotoxicity was measured by the MTT assay against a MCF7 cell line. Naringenin, kaempferol, kaempferol-3-O-d-glucoside, kaempferol-3-O-(2″,6″-di-O-p-trans-coumaroyl) glucoside, ethyl acetate and methanol extracts were found to be active as radical-scavengers with IC50 values of 0.52 mM, 81.5 μM, 1.07 mM, 35.8 μM, 7.21 μg/ml and 6.59 μg/ml, respectively. Naringenin and kaempferol-3-O-(2″,6″-di-O-p-trans-coumaroyl)glucoside were also found to be active in inhibiting cell proliferation of MCF7 with IC50 values of 0.28 μM and 1.3 μM, respectively.

Summary
Melastoma malabathricum L. (melastoma) is an Al-accumulating woody plant that grows in tropical Southeast Asia in acid soils with high aluminum (Al) concentrations and low nutrient concentrations. Because oxalate serves as a ligand for Al accumulation in melastoma leaves and citrate is the ligand associated with Al translocation from roots to shoots, we investigated the role of organic acids in the adaptation of melastoma to growth on these soils. Phosphorus starvation increased oxalate concentration in the rhizosphere, enabling melastoma to solubilize insoluble aluminum phosphate in the rhizosphere. Increased availability of P and Al in the rhizosphere enhanced growth. In the xylem sap, the concentration of citrate increased with increasing Al concentration.

In contrast, the concentrations of malate, succinate and α-ketoglutarate in the xylem sap decreased with increasing Al concentration, suggesting that tricarboxylic acid cycle enzymes were affected by Al treatment.

This showy bush rapidly colonises wastelands as their seeds are dispersed by birds. As such, the Straits Rhododendron is often considered a weed.The beautiful flowers last only one day, opening after sunrise, closing the same day, with the petals falling off on the a few days later. The flower has two different kinds of stamens.The seeds are tasteless and can be eaten, but stains the tongue black. In fact, the word melastoma is Greek for "black mouth".

Uses: The young leaves are eaten raw or cooked and taste sour. The pulp around the seeds can also be eaten (Indonesia). The seeds are used to produce a black dye, the roots, a pink dye. In some places, the leaves are fed to silkworms.

Traditional medicinal uses: Leaves are used to treat diarrhoea and dysentery (Malaysia, Indonesia); wash for ulcers, to prevent scarring from smallpox; and to treat piles.

Role in the habitat: The fruits are the favourites of birds like the flowerpeckers and doves which also disperse the seeds. Squirrels and monkeys are also fond of the fruits. The plant is the host for caterpillars of butterflies such as the Common Sailor (Neptis hylas) and the Grey Count (Tanaecia lepidea). Being among the first to colonise wasteland, the plant helps prevent soil erosion and to allow regeneration of vegetation in such places.
